August 2006
On 22nd August 2006 I dived Secret Bay as part of a Divequest underwater photography trip led by Alex Mustard, to four locations in Bali. While based at the Mimpi Menjangan Resort in the north west corner of Bali, our group travelled to Gilimanuk to dive Secret Bay, a small backwater Bay opposite the ferry dock near Gilimanuk’s commercial port. Its calm, shallow and clear waters contain many rare critters and is a wonderful dive site for serious macro photographers. I could spend many weeks happily diving this dive site again and again. Fish highlights included Dwarf Lionfish, a File Snake, Fingered Dragonets, Leatherjackets, Manila Puffers, Shaggy Frogfish, Snowflake Moray Eels, Striped Catfish, Striped Puffers, Welander’s Flatheads, Whitebar Filefish and White-lined Rockcod.

After two dives we returned to our accommodation at Mimpi and then in the evening, three of us together with Alex Mustard, returned for a night dive. Unlike the daytime dives, there was a moderate to quite strong current. During the dive Paul and I again saw a File Snake. Warily I tried to take close-up photographs of its head but there was something about its agitated movements that discouraged me from getting too close. Paul later advised me that when he first saw the File Snake it rose from the sea bed aggressively towards him and he was forced to back off. As Paul and I completed the dive one of the dive guides helpfully pointed out a Bobbet Worm in the shallows.
