Frogfish D1534
frogfish4_taba_may_08.jpg
This picture of a Frogfish finished fourth in the British Society of Underwater Photographers 'Focus On Competition - Red Sea' in February 2009 and also reached the finals of the Open category at the British Underwater Image Festival 2009.

It was taken at a depth of about 20 metres on The Canyon dive site by the shore near The Taba Hilton, Taba, Egypt on 9th May 2008. The Frogfish was positioned facing downwards very close to the seabed. So I pushed my Nikon D200 digital SLR carefully along the sandy seabed until it was directly beneath and looking up at the Frogfish. I then 'shot blind' with the intention (or hope!) that the Frogfish would appear to be looking at my camera and the surface of the sea, some 20 metres above, would create the impression of a blue water background.

I used a 10-17mm Tokina lens at 10mm focal length on manual setting with two Inon Z-240 strobes on low manual settings. ISO 200, shutter speed 1/125th, aperture F11, Exposure Compensation +0.3 step.
