In November 2014 I dived the Sand Pipe in the Gold Coast Seaway, Queensland with Bob Lewis.
The Gold Coast Seaway is near Surfers Paradise not far from the NSW border. Entrance to this dive site is from a concrete slab on the sea wall. It is essential to dive here on High Tide. Turn right towards the open sea against the diminishing incoming current and after a shallow fin of 15, maybe 20, metres alongside the sea wall you will reach the Sand Pipe. This goes right the way across the Seaway held up on pylons.
Bob’s stride entry did not go well as he smacked his right knee on an underwater boulder. Bob bravely ignored the swelling and blood and carried on with the dive. The underwater visibility was about 4 to 5 metres and soft sponges adorned the Sand Pipe. Fish life if not prolific was quite diverse with Bream, Leatherjackets, Lionfish, Moon Wrasse, Scorpionfish, Luderick, Sargeant Majors and Tangs but there was a distinct lack of small marine animals. We finned about a third to half of the way along the Sand Pipe before turning back.
