Seal Rocks is a small beach town 310 kilometres north of Sydney, south of Forster which is accessed via a dirt road off the Lakes Way road. Just a short distance from the shoreline lie some great dive sites including Big Seal Rock.

 In 2012 I enjoyed ten dives at Seal Rocks, all from Ron Hunter’s dive boat Avanti.

On five occasions Avanti motored down from Forster to meet divers gathered on the beach to then ferry us out for two dives on the local dive sites - we dived Big Rock, Bird Shit Rock, Jimmy's Cave (twice) Skeleton Rock, The Grotto (four times) and West Gutter. Of these my favourite dive was when Avanti motored close to Big Rock and Ron, fellow underwater photographer Justin Gilligan and I jumped from the boat with no air in our BCDs to quickly drop into West Gutter. We had some surge to contend with but it was a wonderful opportunity to photograph Grey Nurse sharks in clear blue shallow water.

The conditions varied enormously over the course of these ten dives but with huge schools of grey nurse sharks and great underwater topography, this is a fabulous diving location when conditions are good.
