In March 2017 Paul Hymers, my former Ashford Dive Club buddy and I flew to Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands for six dives with Davy Jones Diving. We wanted to photograph Angel sharks albeit that March is far from the best time to see them but we hoped that we might be lucky.

Our first two dives were in El Cabron, not far from the Davy Jones Diving dive centre. Brian Goldthorpe, the very helpful owner of Davy Jones Diving was my buddy. Dive conditions were not great and there was no sign of Angel sharks. On Day Two we travelled to Galdar on the north side of the island where the visibility was much better. Brian found a sleeping Angel shark for me but I blew this opportunity to get a good shot. A few minutes later, Paul was treated to an Angel shark swimming straight at him. We had no more sightings after that and after drawing another blank on the second dive, we returned south. On Day Three, Sebastian Garcia Chapman from the dive centre took Paul and I back to El Cabron. The visibility varied a lot from 3 to 12 metres and unfortunately there were no Angel sharks to be seen. Boy did I regret missing my chance in Galdar.
